a literary arts magazine

The editors of “Artichoke Haircut” were in a bar one night dreaming of living on an oil rig, of having a party-boat, of having pet sharks, of starting a magazine. Only one of those dreams came true. So now we’re proud to announce our brand new venture: Come join us on the Crack Boat party cruise to our literary xanadu on an oil rig. No, just kidding. We don’t have that. But we do have a magazine.
Unlike other magazines, Artichoke Haircut was created not to reaffirm the editors pre-existing aesthetic prejudices, just the opposite. We were bored of much of the contemporary literature we had been reading and much of what had been force-fed to us by larger literary publications. We wanted to be surprised and we wanted to publish a magazine that would surprise our readers. For that reason, we strive to publish the best work from around the country by up-and-coming writers who have yet to have their voices heard by a large audience. Baltimore based, we try to put out our magazine twice annually.

“Artichoke Haircut” also hosts a monthly reading series called “You’re Allowed,” at Mount Vernon’s Dionysus Lounge. See our blog for more info on the reading, on the magazine, and more random, sometimes enlightening, notes and posts. Any inqueries about the reading series "You're Allowed" please contact Adam Shutz.
